When I started blogging, I had no clue about how to use the content to publicize in social media. Yes, I did have a defunct twitter account, a not so interesting FB page and a clutter of pins in Pinterest.
I started taking in social media over a year ago when I began to understand the beauty of it. Within a year, I saw my blog stats go up, my readership increase and a better Alexa ranking. So, where did I go wrong?
Common Social Media Mistakes – How to avoid it
Everyone makes these common social media mistakes. When you start using social media for your business, the whole process can be overwhelming because people are just about everywhere! These are some of the mistakes I committed when I started blogging and learnt how to use social media as my blog grew older.
Not engaging with the audience
Yes, I am guilty of not having replied to the comments or a query someone sent to me. After a while I realized that being preachy and having a one sided conversation was not getting my blog anywhere. I had to interact!
The lesson I learnt that if I chose to just post and not engage in a conversation with the readers or respond to the queries, I knew that I could lose the interest of your followers. I spruced up the act and set aside an hour a day to interact, respond to queries and also read up and comment on other’s blog posts that resonated with me. You know what that led to? Interaction!
SMW tip: Be an active commenter. Respond to queries and ensure that it is an interesting reply! Be social to get noticed.
Not being active
Nothing is as irritating as showing off your social media icons only to have a reader click on it to visit inactive pages. How many times do you see a company create a social network but staying inactive not just for day, but weeks and years. When you have an inconsistent posting pattern, it speaks volumes about your seriousness. Think about it.
SMW tip: Spend at least 30 minutes working on your various social medias in a day. Make it a habit.
Treating all social medias as the same
Most people are confused with how to use social media the right way. This is a simple rule I follow – If you do not believe in brevity, choose a blog, if you can master to convey the message in just a few characters choose to tweet and if you think a picture can speak a thousand words, choose pinterest. Each of the social medias will work for you the way you choose it. So choose wisely.
SMW tip: Keep in mind that each social media channel has its own followeres and audience. You need to learn the right communication to keep the people engaged in the social media you choose.
